If you want to do a higher level programme in an Institute of Technology, Shannon College of Hotel Management or a Private College application for these courses is through the CAO so points will be required. However, there are a number of other routes to qualification by doing a 1-2 year course in a Further Education College or taking the 'Earn and Learn' option and work full time while attending college once a week or on a block release basis. There are four ‘earn and learn’ programmes currently available, where you can continue working and study on a block/ day release basis over a few years to get a qualification. Applications for full time Failte Ireland Programmes in Institutes of Technology are now through the CAO and have been made higher level Certificates to facilite this. These changes are in order to streamline applications to the IOT's and to enable students to access the higher education grant schemes as Failte Ireland are no longer in a position to pay student grants.
The new Bar course in Institutes of Technology in now a 2 year programme and is a 'Higher Certificate in Arts in Bar Supervision'. As the new course has a management /supervisory aspect it had to be made 2 years.
