Full Details:

“With the one-year course in Coláiste Dhúlaigh, you can link into the DIT degree course without having to go through the CAO,” says Brian. “The course in DIT went on for three years and that resulted in a degree in Hotel Management. In final year in DIT you could do an elective in Food & Beverage, Rooms Division or Conference & Events. I did the elective in Conference & Events - that was quite good. Apart from that, marketing and economics and IT were the best subjects for me. The courses I did were ideal for the job I’ve got into.

“I worked in the restaurant in DIT while I was at college, and I headed over to
America in the summer where I got work experience in the conference and events departments at the Clarion in Ocean City, Maryland. Even though I was working five to six days a week I was over there with other Irish people so we had the time of our lives. Then after my course, I went to Hawaii for the summer and worked in an Irish bar. You really can take your skills from this industry to any part of the world.

“In my job now, three out of five days a week I’m out on the road selling the hotel. On a daily basis, I might sell bedrooms in the hotel and approach businesses and get them to hold their conferences here, or just bring their business to our hotel in general.

“I love my role working on events. My goal over the next few years would be to work with larger events and attract large scale companies to have their conferences and events in Dublin.”
