The reason I choose the BA in Italian & Linguistics is because I have always been interested in languages. I chose linguistics as it gave me an opportunity to study how language works. I chose Italian because I wanted to study a foreign language which I hadn’t done in school and have always thought Italian was a beautiful language.
I found my first two years hard as I was commuting into UCD and working part time, which did not leave much time to take advantage of the social opportunities that are available to you when you go to university. UCD is also a very big college but luckily some of my classes were small and I was able to make good friends. In UCD there are many different societies you can get involved in and there are great academic resources such as the library computers etc.
One of my best memories of my time in University is my Erasmus year. Erasmus is a European wide exchange programme which gives students the opportunity to study abroad.
My job with Tourism Ireland is great as I’m very interested in learning languages but also I can experience another culture first hand. Tourism Ireland’s role is to promote the island of Ireland as a holiday destination – so I’m working from their office in Milan promoting Ireland to the Italians.
The best thing about working for Tourism Ireland in Milan is that I enjoy dealing directly with the general public who are looking for information on Ireland. I am proud of my country and enjoy promoting it. I got the job as part of a graduate placement called EOP which is run by IBEC.
From my experience to date I would gladly take up a role in Tourism when my placement is up if I get the opportunity. The tourism industry is great for people who enjoy travel, dealing with all types of people and learning about new cultures and your own.
