Why did you choose to do your course?
“I worked throughout college in Jury’s inn in Galway but I saw getting the qualifications as a better chance of making sure I got full time work. I’m glad I went back to college and did the BA in Hotel and Catering Management”.
What was the best part about your course?
“The best part about the course was the experience. I did a year in Liverpool and got to see the opening of the Jury’s over there. It was great experience that I would have never got without the course.”
What’s the vibe like on campus?
“The best thing about the college was the lectures. There what makes the course enjoyable. They are very helpful. One time I had a problem with one of my projects and my year head took me in and sat me down and really helped me out”.
What interests or skills do you need to enjoy this course?
“My class was really a mixed bunch of people, some people were very quiet and others not so. I think you need to be open with people who are willing to learn and willing to try new things. Before I did the course i would have never thought I would have gone to England for a year.”
Is there a large variety of jobs you can work in when you qualify from this course?
“People think that all you do is cook but it’s not true. The last year was all business and strategy. One of my friends from the course now works in HR. At the end of the day it’s a business degree”.
What kind or personality do you need to enjoy this work?
“Well you need to be flexible, it’s not Monday to Friday, 9 to 5 work. I enjoy talking to people, I don’t need the weekend off, I like the varied hours. I enjoy it because it’s different”.
What kind of skills do you use on a daily basis at work?
“Dealing with people mainly. Knowing how to deal with people. They are the hardest thing to deal with. It’s all about experience, no amount of college work can prepare you for that.”
What kind of subjects do you study as part of your course and how useful are they in the real world?
“A lot of the stuff that we did in college will be useful in your job in the future. You can tell you went to college and who didn’t. It’s a case of the stuff that you learn mightn’t be that important to you when you start working but it definitely will help in the future.”
What advice would you give to students considering studying your course?
“You would want to be a bit mature and be prepared. You will get out of it what you put in. You should enjoy working with people and you should enjoy serving customers. When you’re working, it’s the same as any job, you have your good days and your bad days”.
What is the best thing about your job – what are the main perks?
“I get on really well with everyone I work with. It’s a great buzz wherever you work. I really enjoy talking to people from all over the world”.
